Write for Us
Know backgammon well and can explain it clearly? We welcome pitches for original articles that help players learn and enjoy the game.
Publication is not guaranteed. Every pitch is reviewed by an editor, and we accept only pieces that fit the site and meet the standards below.
Topics we consider
- Beginner strategy explained clearly, such as safe play, priming, the running game or when to hit.
- The doubling cube for newcomers: when to double, when to take and match scores.
- Bearing off technique and common endgame positions.
- The history of backgammon and its relatives, with reliable sources.
- Variants and house rules, clearly described as variations.
- Teaching the game to children, students or a club.
- Etiquette and fair play in casual and online games.
We do not publish gambling, betting or casino content, reviews of paid apps or services, or articles that exist mainly to carry links.
Quality standards
- Written for real players, in plain English, with backgammon terms explained.
- Accurate. Rules must match the standard rules; strategy advice should be explained, not just asserted.
- Specific. Use example positions, dice and moves (for example 24/18 13/11) rather than generalities.
- Supported. Historical or factual claims need sources we can check.
- Usually between 1,000 and 2,000 words, with a clear structure and headings.
Originality
Submissions must be your own, previously unpublished work and must not be under consideration elsewhere. We do not accept copied, spun or lightly rewritten text, or text generated by AI tools and submitted without substantial human writing, checking and editing. If you used tools to help, tell us how. Images and diagrams must be your own or properly licensed, with the licence stated.
Not allowed
- Spam, mass-sent pitches or pitches unrelated to backgammon.
- Copied or plagiarised content.
- Misleading claims, including promises of winning systems, invented statistics or fake credentials.
- Hidden links, undisclosed sponsorship or affiliate links.
- Content that is hateful, defamatory or breaks the law.
Editorial review
Submissions may be selected for further review and a draft may be requested. Any accepted article must have its facts, rules and example positions checked and may be edited for accuracy, clarity, length and style. We will share significant changes with you before publication. Accepted work may become a new guide page or be used to expand an existing one, with credit agreed with you beforehand.
Links are included only when they help readers, at our editorial discretion, and may be marked or removed. We do not promise links of any kind.
Commercial submissions and disclosure
If you, your employer or a client has a commercial interest in anything you mention, such as a product, app, book, club or service, you must tell us in your pitch. We decide whether such a piece fits the site. If it is published, the relationship is disclosed clearly on the page and any related links are marked as sponsored. Undisclosed commercial interests lead to rejection or removal.
How to submit
- Email contact@freebackgammon.net with “Article pitch:” and your working title in the subject.
- Include a short outline (a few bullet points), who the article is for and why you are the right person to write it.
- Add one or two links to writing you have published, or a short sample if you have none.
- Disclose any commercial interest as described above.
Please do not send full drafts or attachments with your first email. We aim to reply to pitches we want to take further; if you have not heard from us within four weeks, assume we are not taking it forward. Your email is handled as described in the privacy policy.
